Why Do We Offer A Professional Leather Furniture Cleaning Service?
Janice and I (Don) are the owners of Doll Bros, and we added this service in 2004 because of the $3,500.00 mistake that we made.
We have never owned leather upholstery before… so what did we do? We bought a family room full of white leather upholstered furniture!
With 2 children, 3 dogs and a house that never stops entertaining – this was really dumb! What were we thinking?
Well, we have had fabric furniture our whole lives, and we thought leather would be easier to maintain. Even though one of our signature services is Upholstery Cleaning— which I’ve been doing since I was a little boy, somehow I thought you wouldn’t need to clean leather as often as fabric.
This is a before and after photo of our furniture. The picture on the left is what the leather looked after two years. The picture on the right was right after the cleaning.
Doll Bros 3 step Leather Furniture Cleaning process
Step #1: Clean the Leather and remove body oil, dirt and debris.
Step #2: Apply Conditioner Revitalizer. This is the most critical importance of the life of the skin. “The Skin Is Everything”! In Step #2 we are putting the fat back into the skin to make it soft and supple. If the skin gets dry it cracks, if the skin cracks then the paint cracks, if the pain cracks…. You will have 1 ugly and ruined piece of leather furniture!
Step #3: Apply Protection cream. This repels water, sweat and body oils.
The most important thing for you to know and to share with others;
Regardless if you use Doll Bros or not for your Leather Furniture Cleaning you must remember this one thing.
The life and beauty of your leather is “all about the skin”. Every 3 years your Leather furniture needs to be cleaned not because you think it looks dirty or not, that is not the point. The skin needs the conditioner/revitalizer put back into it so that the skin will stay supple. The life and beauty of your leather furniture is all about the skin.
Let’s rewind and you will better understand why we started leather furniture cleaning services
When our leather Furniture was delivered, the delivery man gave me a bottle of leather cleaner as a gift for our purchase. After week 2 of ownership, it was already time to use the cleaner. Much to my dismay, this product did nothing to clean the leather… Uh Oh!
By Month 10, owning Leather furniture was already a huge disappointment for Janice and I.
As faith and luck has it, our cleaning supplier announced a new training seminar for Leather Cleaning in 2005. This was a two day seminar that Aaron and I attended.
LeatherMaster armed us with knowledge, cleaning techniques, proper equipment, and a superior product line.
We at Doll Bros. quickly added this to our cleaning services, only after— yes, indeed— we cleaned, conditioned, and protected our own white leather sofa, chairs & ottoman.. We couldn’t have been more impressed and relieved at the same time. As you can see by the picture above, we were quickly able to restore our own leather furniture.
Cleaning Leather is All About Preserving Cow Skin
If we began this article with the bold headline above… It would be 100% accurate!
Remember that old saying, beauty is only skin deep?
That simply coined phrase really does describe leather upholstered furniture. Because all that visual beauty is only as good as the strength and vitality of the skin.
What color is your leather? Is that the color of the cows you see in the pasture?
I’m sure you know that was a rhetorical question, the same one I was asked as a kid growing up in Kentucky.
So what is it that they put on that nasty piece of skin to turn it into a beautiful piece of furniture? For the sake of time and debate, let’s just call it Paint.
It’s the “paint on the skin” that gives it the beauty. If anything happens to the paint, it will affect the beauty. The next picture is of damaged skin, with damaged paint. In other words, you’re the owner of a damaged piece of furniture!
This is an extreme picture, and I purposely chose it because of that. Yes, it is ruined, The skin dried and cracked. And the paint cracked… and the rest is history.
Skin Checklist for You:
1. You can feel the dryness of the leather with your hands. Leather, just like the skin on your arms, gets dry without lotion. When you’re out in the sun and wind all day, and your skin becomes dry, we all do the same thing… we put lotion on our skin! …Ahhh, wheeww is what your skin says, and you feel that relief. Leather skin is the same way. You can literally see it when we put the conditioner on your leather upholstery.
2. You can see deep or overlapping folds. The skin is doing a natural thing; it’s stretching. It needs a conditioner to help it relax!
3. Your leather furniture pieces are over 3 years old. Regardless of what you visually see, get the skin conditioned! The beauty and life is all about the skin. Imagine not putting lotion on your own skin for 3 years— can you imagine the extreme dryness?
DIY Cleaning Leather Furniture
Doll Bros. Carpet Dry Cleaning cleans over 1,400 homes every year, so we get the opportunity to ask people how they care for their leather upholstered furniture.
I can’t tell you how many hundreds upon hundreds of leather pieces of furniture are neglected. Most people just wipe furniture down with something that is handy, so that they can “spiff it up.”
Now, I’m not implying that people damage their leather on purpose. They simply don’t know how to properly take care of it. Most of us didn’t grow up using leather (for daily use), and we’re unaware of basic maintenance.
Weekly maintenance is a piece of cake— just don’t use any types of cleaners that act as a “skin-drying agent.” The purpose of a weekly spiffing is to get the light coating of body oil off, so that it does not penetrate into the painted skin.
…How about we start with a list of what NOT to use.
You Should NOT Use:
Windex, Armor-All, Furniture Polish, Vinegar mixtures, Ammonia Mixtures, or any other abrasive cleaners that contain any form of alcohol.
Instead You Should:
NOTE: We’re talking about a weekly spiffing of your leather “before it gets a heavy build-up.”
Lightly mist water on a clean cloth. In a circular motion, wipe down the leather, and immediately follow that by wiping it up with a dry cloth.
The dry cloth is important because you don’t want the water to dry into the skin. …And, that’s it! That’s all there is to a weekly spiffing.
For a more aggressive cleaning, call a leather cleaning professional, like Doll Brothers.
(In writing this article, I scoured the Internet. I cannot believe the misinformation you’ll find.)
Doll Bros. 3-Step Professional Leather Cleaning Process
Our low price for Doll Bros. Leather Cleaning Service includes the cleaning, conditioner & protector…
If the leather is not properly maintained, it will crack prematurely. When this happens, the color of the paint starts to crack too, and just like that, your beautiful furniture is ruined!
Our Leather Furniture Cleaning Services includes exclusive use of LeatherMaster furniture cleaning products. These are the premium cleaners and conditioners in the Leather Cleaning Industry.
1st we clean the leather to remove the debris and body oils.
2nd we add the conditioner right back into the skin. This is the natural fat readily absorbed by the skin, and it makes the leather nice and supple.
3rd we add a Protection Cream to help protect the leather against spills and accidents.
Florida heat and humidity, in addition to normal wear-and-tear, can be very hard on your leather car seats.
Doll Bros. can perform our unique 3-step leather cleaning process to the leather in your vehicles too.
Here are two before-and-after pictures just to give you some ideas. Most, if not all, of these customers agreed to the cleaning, but thought their car interior didn’t look that bad until we stop in the middle….. and show them the difference.
Notice the squares in each photo where we cleaned, and look how the color and the luster of the skin and paint rebounded. And that’s the way leather ages as it sits in your home year after year. The color becomes dull, and the skin ages.
…Now I’ll close this article to remind you once again:
If your leather Upholstery is 3 years old or older, it’s time to clean, moisturize and apply protection cream. This investment is relatively small to ensure the life, beauty and full enjoyment of your beautiful furniture!
